Tassie Winter Explorer

July 30, 2018

The PanAir Team headed south this month to explore the stunning North West Coast and the breathtaking Tarkine Wilderness areas of Tasmania, Australia's most Southern state.

Departing from the desperately dry areas of Bathurst and the Central West, we headed south via Mallacoota then onto overfly a cloudy Flinders Island and finally (after 3 hours & 20 minutes), landing at Devonport on the NW Coast of Tasmania.

Highlights of the tour of the Apple Isle included a day trip to Stanley and a visit to the historic home Highfield House.

Highfield House was the original headquarters of the Van Diemen's Land Company, which was responsible for the settlement of Northwest Tasmania. There was of course a fabulous seafood lunch at the very famous Hursey Seafood and a tour of the historic township of Stanley.

Another day tour to the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain National Park, Dove lake and lunch at Cradle Mountain Lodge Peppers Resort with a visit to the team at Devils@Cradle  which is a very unique Tasmanian conservation facility.

Devils@Cradle allows visitors to view these animals from the comfort of the Visitors Centre or wander through the sanctuary on a personalised guided tour which ensures a unique close up encounter with a Tasmanian devil. Keepers will explain the ongoing challenge with the Devils facial tumor disease and the need for the conservation breeding program.

A visit to the stunning Tarkine wilderness area and the Tarkine Wilderness Lodge also a big highlight for those wishing to see the stunning wilderness regions of NW Tasmania and the Tarkine wilderness which contains one of the world's most significant remaining tracts of temperate rainforest, second only in size to those in western Canada. A relic from the ancient supercontinent.

Whilst it is currently the middle of winter in Tasmania, the days have been comfortably fresh, but clear allowing for plenty of exploration, tonnes of fresh Tasmanian produce to sample and some stunning photography opportunities..
